Signs and sysmbols can be found everywhere. We generally think of them as giving directions or instructions or, in a city like York, aiming to overcome language barriers.
But as you will see from this gallery, there are other ways of interpreting what is around us. I like to think that in choosing to rise to the photographic challenge, we make a conscious decision to look at the world with a different perspective. I still find that seeing the world through a camera’s viewfinder switches my mind to a different mode, for example, although that may be considered old-fashioned!
We often hear that the equipment you use is not as important as the mental – and emotional – approach you take to your craft. We cannot tell from the images in this gallery what equipment each photographer used so we simply look at each image and feel what it is saying to us, perhaps together with the title they chose.
I am pleased to say that with this gallery I am continually delighted by the amusing, interesting and unexpected images.
