The subject of this Challenge was ‘split toning’, an editing technique that applies one colour to the highlights and a different colour to the shadows. This enables more precise control over the colour palette and isolates the bright and dark areas of an image.
Members were asked to create up to five images using the split toning technique. Although some members will have already been familiar with the technique, others may have used the Challenge to experiment with split toning their images for the first time.
Split toning is a simple idea and is easy to apply using standard image processing software, yet it is extremely powerful. Even making subtle changes can dramatically improve the final image. It can turn a dull image into a spectacular one, adding that magic ingredient required to evoke the scene and atmosphere you remember when you took the shot. It is also possible to get really creative with it, choosing colours judiciously to achieve strong, artistic images.
As you can see in the gallery below, there are some fabulous images. Members achieved a wide variety of different effects, showcasing both the versatility of the technique – and of our members! Some of the images are classic landscapes, where subtle effects have produced wonderfully atmospheric scenes. In others, members have added a creative twist to come up with more artistic images, or have given their images an old-world vintage look.
Very well done to everyone who submitted images for this Challenge. A gallery to be proud of!
