Joss Barratt: Behind the Scenes

We are delighted to be joined by Joss Barratt, whose work will be immediately recognisable to cinema goers and TV viewers. Joss is a Somerset-based photographer who started his career as a photojournalist but now captures the still images used in film, TV and documentary production.

Although Joss describes his work as “capturing someone else’s vision” there can be no doubt that Joss does very much more than this. He works with sensitivity and perceptiveness, and his images reflect the connection and often lasting friendships he forms with those he works with.

There is a strong narrative, and in Joss’s words,

“I always try to approach a film set like I would a story. I treat everyone with interest, dignity and respect and hopefully the pictures will follow.”

Joss has a longstanding working relationship with the film director Ken Loach and has been the stills photographer for his three most recent films, all set in the north-east. The latest film, ‘The Old Oak’, required even greater input as Joss was instrumental in teaching actress Ebla Mari how to use a camera for her starring role as a Syrian photographer and refugee. So well did he do his job that several of Ebla’s own images are used alongside Joss’s in the slideshow scene in the film.

Amongst many others, Joss has worked on the films ‘I, Daniel Blake’ and Far from the Madding Crowd’ and on television dramas including ‘The Good Karma Hospital’, National Treasure, and ‘Downton Abbey’.

Expect to see some beautiful and powerful images. Not to be missed!
