A sense of place  Monochrome Interest Group, 5 November 2024

A sense of place expresses the essential character and spirit of a location—what makes it special or unique, such as its cultural or natural identity. It is a moment in time captured in an image where the viewer can sense being there.

Members were invited to interpret ‘A sense of place’ in their own way. As you can see, there is an amazing variety of images. Some feature buildings, others people or expressive landscapes, from seascapes to mountain views, or the wonderfully evocative age of steam. Some were taken locally, others further afield either in the UK or in far-flung places, including China, Vietnam, Peru, Australia and New Zealand. Whatever and wherever they were taken, and there are too many to mention, they all captured a moment in time for the photographer. Take a look and see which images make you feel that moment in time?

Many thanks to all the contributors for their images, and to David Ireland for setting them to music and for his illuminating presentation on Bill Brandt, one of the most influential British photographers of the 20th century.
