Malcolm Hupman: Where I photograph British wildlife

In-person meeting.

My photographic journey started almost fifty years ago while living in Zambia. Driven by an interest in wildlife, I decided to visit the Luangwa Valley Game Park and sought to purchase a camera for the trip. The only option available was a second-hand Zenith B fitted with a 50mm lens, which was far from ideal for safari photography. Consequently, my initial results were disappointing.

Shortly after this experience, I returned to the United Kingdom. There, I invested in my first Nikon camera, joined a camera club, and built a personal darkroom, which allowed me to further develop my skills and techniques. In 1999, I was gifted a Sony Mavica, which recorded images onto floppy discs. At the time, digital photography did not impress me. However, technology continued to evolve, and ten years later, I decided to purchase a DSLR. The advantages for wildlife photography were evident, leading me to specialise in this genre between 2010 and 2020.

I enjoy capturing all genres of photography and regularly give talks to photographic societies and wildlife groups. In 2023, I began judging photographic club competitions, and have since been approved by the Midlands Counties Photographic Federation.
