Amy Bateman: ‘Forty Farms – Behind the Scenes’

We are delighted to welcome Amy Bateman from Croft Foot Farm near Kendal.

Amy’s visit comes hot on the heels of her photography-based book ‘Forty Farms’, which aims to highlight the work carried out by farmers across Cumbria, a place she fell in love with over 16 years ago after meeting her husband, Colin.

‘Forty Farms’ is an homage to the iconic Cumbrian landscape and those who work tirelessly to maintain it. From the Herdwick-grazed Lake District commons to the big-sky Solway marshes; from isolated farmsteads, unchanged in generations, to businesses at the cutting-edge of innovation; from world-class sheep breeders to award-winning cheese-makers, the book is a visual record of farming at a period of profound change.

Amy’s book has been followed by a hugely successful touring exhibition, which has been visited by over 60,000 people. Amy is hoping to bring the exhibition to York in the not too distant future.

Amy’s talk ‘Forty Farms – Behind the Scenes’ provides a unique insight into how she produced the book and created some of the images, together with some hilarious anecdotes from the journey.

For Amy, life through a lens came after having children. Having given up her previous career to look after them at home on the farm, the camera went with her, capturing their early years. She is now thrilled to be pursuing a career as a photographer after winning several photography awards , including British Life Photographer of the Year.
