Polina Plotnikova: ‘Starting From a Blank Canvas’

Polina Plotnikova is an award winning and creative ‘picture maker’ based in London. She specialises in floral and still life photography, including some intriguing ‘Unstill Life’ illusions. Polina is a studio photographer, and works like an artist, beginning with a distinct vision that she sets out to achieve. The evening will comprise sessions on both Polina’s floral and still life work, including some technical explanations to help understand how such stunning images can be created.

In her ‘Floral’ photography, Polina likens herself to a portrait photographer, always looking for the individual and unique features in each flower to produce a photograph that reflects its mood, character and beauty, rather than a documentary image. She also captures the charm and hint of sadness in flowers that are past their prime.

The ‘Still Life’ component of Polina’s work is about visualisation and control. Working in the studio gives the photographer the potential to have total control over composition, lighting, textures and colours. The end result is whatever the artist chooses. Some of Polina’s photographs resemble the work of the ‘Old Masters’ and others are more surreal.

This is certain to be a fascinating evening and Polina may inspire us to use some new techniques to create some images for our upcoming exhibition.
