Paddy’s Hole

Paddy’s Hole is a small harbour, named for the Irish workers who helped build the South Gare breakwater at the mouth of the River Tees. There are also two smaller harbours south of Paddy’s Hole named Guy’s Hole and Powder Hole. Between Guy’s Hole and Powder Hole are the remains of the Powder Jetty.

Adjacent to the Gare are scrub and grass covered sand dunes and Coatham Sands extending to Redcar in the distance. On the inner side of the breakwater just south of the harbours are Brands Sands, known for its birdlife, and the wooden wreck of a ship.

The region’s industrial heritage is visible all around. The redundant, rusting Teeside Steelworks are clearly visible through the boundary security fence. Industrial facilities across the mouth of the Tees and passing ships will make an interesting backdrop to your images.
