Old and new

This is the fourth and final in a series of four events intended to help members to interpret and find inspiration for images that reflect each the four themes of Challenge #16. These images will form the basis of our Summer Exhibition at the York Theatre Royal.

The Coppergate Woman production has its roots in the finding of the skeleton of a Viking woman during excavations around Coppergate in the late 1970s. The play imagines the woman coming back to life in contemporary York and the juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern.

As everyone knows, York abounds with examples of old juxtaposed with new. Perhaps the most obvious are ancient and modern architecture situated side-by-side around the city, but you may also see a grandparent with a grandchild, a young person with an heirloom or a dead flower adjacent to a bud. You might decide to make a diptych of an old building alongside a new one. The ideas and interpretations are up to you.

Remember that this session is intended to get you thinking about what ‘old and new’ means in relation to York, rather than directly to the Coppergate Woman production. It may well also jog your memory in terms of having other suitable images in your archives that you would be able to submit for the Exhibition.

Meeting up at York Theatre Royal at midday will maintain the central social aspect of the Club by getting together and also allow you to share ideas before going out and about in York to take your photographs. We would encourage you to take advantage of this, but if that’s not possible, you could still use this outing as inspiration for you to take photos at another convenient time.

We are keen to include members who do not live locally, so please note that, whilst it would be appropriate where possible for your images for the Exhibition to have a link to York or a local flavour, how closely or explicitly they are related is open to interpretation, so you should still feel free to submit images that you think fit the brief.

Please submit up to five images for C&C in the usual way.

Note that the guidelines for image submission for the Exhibition are different and are set out in the Challenge #16 information.
