Charlie Waite: Behind the Photograph
We are thrilled to welcome the world-renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite as our first speaker of the season.
Charlie Waite has been an advocate of ‘the photograph’ and the importance of engaging with the landscape through photography for over 40 years. He has had a lifetime’s experience of talking to photography enthusiasts and has travelled the length and breadth of the UK, Europe and the USA. His passion for passing on his experience and knowledge and his engaging manner, warmth and lively anecdotes have resulted in loyal audiences across the globe.
Charlie’s photographs convey a quality of spirituality, serenity and calm and have an almost painterly quality. His utmost respect for the world around him and his magical relationship with the natural world enable him, through his photography, to create a permanent record of its beauty.
During his former early career as an actor, Charlie became fascinated by theatrical lighting and design, and gradually the landscape and the way it can be revealed to us through light and shade stole him away from the acting profession.
His special approach has earned him a worldwide reputation, and he has won countless prestigious awards, including a Royal Photographic Society Fellowship, an Honorary Fellowship to the British Institute of Professional Photographers, and Amateur Photographer’s Power of Photography award, which is awarded to photographers whose work has been deemed to demonstrate effectively the powerful and memorable images of which photography is capable.
His photographs are held in private and corporate collections throughout the world, and he has held numerous solo exhibitions all over the world, including in London, Tokyo, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, New York and California. Over the past forty years, Charlie has lectured throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and the US and he provides tuition to amateur, professional and aspiring photographers of all ages from anywhere in the world, which he hugely enjoys. He is also frequently seen on British television discussing the finer aspects of landscape photography.
Charlie is the owner and founder of Light and Land, the UK’s leading photographic workshop and tour company, which runs photographic tours, courses and workshops, both in the UK and worldwide, that are dedicated to inspiring photographers and improving their photography.
In 2007, Charlie launched the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year, an international photography competition to find the UK’s ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’. This ties in perfectly with his desire to share his passion and appreciation of the beauty of our surroundings through photography.

Charlie conducts his lectures with passion, humour and grace, taking the audience on a colourful and enchanting journey. Highly illustrated, his lectures are enjoyable, uplifting and memorable, with many finding the inspiration to explore the natural world further, embarking on their own personal journey with or without a camera.

RAFFLE
Charlie has very kindly donated a print of one of his beautiful images, ‘Valensole II’, (shown) depicting a single tree in the lavender fields in Provence, France. Tickets are unfortunately no longer available.
Names will be entered into the draw for the print, the draw itself will take place during the evening.
