A favourite project in monochrome
This MIG meeting will be in two parts, with refreshments during the break.
Part One
We will be starting the evening with a short talk about Sebastião Salgado, one of the world’s most renowned photographers. Salgado works on long term, self-assigned projects, many of which have been published as books: The Other Americas, Sahel, Workers, Migrations, and Genesis. The latter three are mammoth collections with hundreds of images from all around the world. His most famous pictures are of a gold mine in Brazil called Serra Pelada taken between 1986 and 1989. His favourite work medium is Black & White, mainly taken with Analogue Film cameras and Kodak Tmax Film.
Following the talk there will be a Slide Presentation of some of his works, and there’ll be the chance to look at some of his books during the break.
Part Two
Following on from Salgado’s projects, the theme for members this evening will be monochrome images from one of their own favourite projects.
As always, we would like to see maximum participation, so all members are encouraged to submit up to 5 images that capture ‘A Favourite Project in Monochrome’. We would like to see images encompassing as many genres as possible, so whatever your favourite genre, we are sure that everyone will be able to find or create images that fit this theme.
Here are a few ideas to consider when finding images for the ‘A favourite project in monochrome’ theme, but please feel free to come up with your own:
- The natural world
- Sports venues
- Travel
- Days out
- Social events
- Local events
- Goths/People
- Food
- Weather
We will present each member’s five digital images in an AV slide show presentation on the night. To help in us processing the images in the right order could members number each of their images 1 to 5 so that these can be shown in the right sequence for story-telling.
After the slide show members will be free to comment or ask questions about any of the themes or individual photographs shown in the slide show.
In order to choose and present your project to members, here are a few helpful thoughts:
- Passion – Be passionate about your proposed subject.
- Driving Force – What do you love outside of photography? Favourite projects are usually things connected to what you love to do outside of photography.
- How will I shoot this project? – What is your vision? Will it be colour or B&W (in this case B&W), reportage or posed portraits, epic landscapes etc? Will the photos have a similar look and feel? What do you want the photos to look like?
- Choose a subject that is accessible – You can start a photographic project at home, Table-top, Garden, On Holiday or in your local city or town to keep things closer to home. You may already have images on your computer that would make up your chosen project.
- Encompass images around the subject – Take images around the main subject to show the viewer the surroundings that make up the habitat of the subject, thereby telling a story of your chosen subject.
- Plan your project – But leave room for spontaneity. You want and need a plan for how you are going to get this project going. Just don’t be afraid to adapt as the creative forces start working when you are out there shooting.
Digital images must be submitted as follows:
Your monochrome images can be pure black and white, or toned e.g. sepia, selenium or copper, which may give an extra dimension to your chosen images. Details of how to submit can be found here.
Images must be submitted by Friday 21 February by WeTransfer to mig@bishopthorpecc.co.uk.
