Bishop Wilton – Photo Walk

It is suggested that you start today’s walk with a visit to St Edith’s Church. This is one of the rural Wolds churches either built, rebuilt or restored by Sir Tatton Sykes. The interior is packed with interest including The West Window that celebrates a gift by King Aethelson, the first King of all England. A gift of a Manor and extensive land on the outskirts of Bishop Wilton to the ‘See of York’ via St John of Beverley in the year 934. On this land was built a Palace for the Archbishop Gray of York 1216-1255. Remnants of the moat and mounds can still be seen on the field adjacent the village.

Our walk continues with a short climb elevating us above Bishop Wilton giving us the opportunity of spectacular views across the village and the Vale of York beyond. As we climb higher the views become even more impressive. This circular walk takes us to the top of Worsendale before descending on the road back towards Bishop Wilton. An exploration of the village and ancient stream is suggested before completing your tour of the area.
